My name is Daisy Tortuga (b. Kent, 1997). I'm a Margate based artist and musician. My visual practice combines my fascination with traditional crafting techniques with my desire to explore deeply personal themes. The work is highly autobiographical and addresses topics including mental health, sexuality, identity and trauma. It is expressed across a range of traditional craft-forms - primarily rugs, ceramics, knitwear and glass.
My unique visual language explores the absurdity of life, using dark humour and a childlike sense of self-expression. Childhood plays a very important role in my work; being an only child, I tended to live more in my own imaginary world, where things made sense. In this place, I could collect and colour the world from my own perspective. Today, I emulate this world in my studio.
“Daisy’s work is immediately recognizable due to its vulnerable and deeply personal nature, which connects viewers not only to her growth as an artist but also to their own vulnerabilities.”
